Horror that chills, true crime that stings, and a watchlist worth losing sleep over. We dive into a stack of titles that actually earned our time, starting with the eerie pull of NOS4A2 and the surprise gem School Spirits, where the afterlife turns into a sharp, character-led mystery. From there we move through A True Haunting’s careful slow burn and the bold world-building of Welcome to Derry, which expands Pennywise lore without flattening the fear.
The stakes turn painfully real as we examine the Ruby Franke case and the Turpin family, two devastating looks at abuse hiding behind authority and belief. We talk through what these docs do well, why they’re hard to watch, and how institutions fail when language is used to blur harm. Then we cross to the UK for a run of standouts: Beef’s hilarious, spiraling feud; Behind Her Eyes with its sleek psychological switchbacks; and Baby Reindeer, a raw, unnerving portrait of obsession, consent, and the fallout of trauma.
We also hit the genre beats that kept us hooked—Tarot’s clever death-by-archetype premise, Harlan Coben’s Stay Close and Safe threading suburban lies with missing persons, Yellowjackets slicing between survival and aftermath, and the puzzle-box grief of There’s Something Wrong with Aunt Diane. Filthy Rich and the Murdaugh sagas round out a set of stories where power, secrecy, and denial finally meet daylight, with survivor voices steering the narrative.
To cap it off, we share the new releases we’re itching to see and make the case for original ideas over tired remakes. If you love tense storytelling, tight world rules, and characters who bleed when choices cut, queue this one up. Kicking Off: Recent Watches
SPEAKER_00Good evening, my weirdos. This is your host, Melissa, back at Strange Strange Beyond Insane. And I want to kind of touch base on some like TV shows and movies that I have watched or want to see. I'm gonna start off with more of the recent ones that I have finished and kind of let you guys know my feedback and brief kind of understanding of what these shows and movies are about. So a couple shows that I want to start off with that I've recently finished that actually changed my brain chemistry. Um the first one I want to start with is Nas4A2, or that's the license plate, which is actual NOS4A2, but it's pronounced Nastrafutu, I think is how you say it, the vampire. Um, this is an American supernatural horror drama television series based on the 2013 novel by Joe Hill that ran on AMC from June 2nd until um August 23rd of 2020. So basically, um this follows Vic McQueen, which her real name in the show is Victoria, and she is a young working-class artist who discovers that she has supernatural ability to track the seemingly immortal Charlie Minx. Minx feeds on the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmas land, a twisted Christmas village of Minx imagination, where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Vic must strive to defeat Minx and rescue his victims without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself. Now, I guess it sounds, you know, kind of blah, but you like this show was so good, and probably because it was based on a novel, and I would love to read this novel because usually it's better than the shows or the movies. Um it was it was done so well, it's very creepy and kind of scary, but more kept you interested, you know, throughout um, well, for over a year, so it was from 2019 to 2020, but there was I think four seasons. No, two seasons only. I'm sorry, two seasons. Um, but I think the episodes were about an hour each, so it would I loved it. I I definitely out of five stars, I would give that a solid four, 4.5. Okay, then the next one that I want to talk about, which I'm still watching, and this is on um Paramount, School Spirits. So I had seen a lot of stuff about this on social media, and I kind of like seen some ads, and I was like, nah, it's gonna be too young for for me, but it's actually very interesting and very, very compelling. School Spirits is an American supernatural teen drama horror television series. Um, and it sets it sets place in the town of Split River, which is a fictional town, of course, in Wisconsin. The show follows Maddie, a teen girl stuck in the afterlife, investigating her own mysterious disappearance. She goes on a crime-solving journey as she adjusts to high school and the afterlife, but the closer she gets to the truth, the more secrets and lies she discovers. Um, this show is fucking awesome. The characters are great, I think the acting's great. Um, also, it there was a guest appearance that came in, and I will give you a little insight. Maybe it was the Bride of Chucky. So Jennifer Tilley um plays as Deborah Hunter Price in season three. Um, that's the season that I'm on now, and it is so good. I like I said, I thought, uh no, this might be a little too young for me, but very, very, very well done. Um, again, I'll give that at about a 4.5 star rating. I definitely think if you're interested in paranormal and the afterlife, you should watch this show because the angles that they show on it and how it works and how you cross over and how certain like souls are stuck, I thought they did an excellent job. So, a true haunting on Netflix, it's about real stories. It's a documentary, I thought was absolutely amazing. The first episode the first couple episodes are my favorite, and I really love at the ending how they showed why they kind of like kept it going. Because at first I was like, all right, this is kind of running on too long about this particular haunting, but it really ties into the end, so I'd give that a you know, solid four. I really enjoyed it. Um, of course, welcome to Dairy. That was really, really fun and pretty spooky. Of course, Pennywise, you know, never, ever, ever, ever disappoints, right? Who doesn't like a creepy clown? And going back way back into the what early 90s when it her late 80s, late 80s, early 90s, the original it movie, um I Am That Old, where it was two-part VHS, right? Just like the Titanic. That show was great, it opened up so many more possibilities for the show to continue. And what I took from it is that it's going to be like a multiverse, but in Pennywise's world, right? So I think there's gonna be a lot of great things that are gonna happen. I really liked that I believe it took place in the 60s. Um, I liked how it was really centered around the airbase and the, you know, the military. There was just a lot of things going on in the show, and there's a lot of what ifs and what's next. So I think everybody really people that are really, really into it, Pennywise, I think everyone loved that show, and we waited long enough for it, right? So this documentary was very interesting on Hulu. Um, very hard to watch. So the Ruby Frankie story, um Devil in the Family, the fall of Ruby Frankie on Hulu was very, very interesting. In fact, I didn't even know that in early 2015, this Frankie created a YouTube channel called Eight Passengers, in which she documented her family life in Utah with her husband Kevin and their six children. She originally posted five days a week at 6 a.m. As of June 20th, the channel had around 2.5 million subscribers. And she even got to like 1 billion views. In the beginning of 2020, when one of Frankie's children, a 15-year-old boy, said that he had been banned from his bedroom and made to sleep on a beanbag for seven months. Viewers became concerned about his mother's disciplinary methods. On another occasion, her youngest daughter was sent to school without a packed lunch because Ruby believed her six-year-old daughter was old enough to prepare and be responsible for her own lunch. When the school contacted her with concern over this, she refused to bring a lunch for her daughter. Some of the severe punishments Frankie imposed on her children included sending a child to a wilderness camp for troubled teens, threatening to behead a stuffed toy, and telling two of her children that Santa Claus would not be bringing them anything for Christmas that year because they were too numb to respond to punishments. The Frankie parents posted in defense of the discipline saying that the incidents had been taken out of context. The APAS YouTube channel declined in popularity in 2021. In 2022, the Frankes separated and Kevin moved out of the house. After her YouTube channel was suspended that year, Ruby began working as a mental health coach at Con Zeons, I think, a company run by Jody Hilderbrandt, the other devil. Um, she was supposedly a counselor. They launched a new video channel together called Con Xeons in 2022 and created a joint Instagram account called the Moms of Truth. Okay, so neighbors and the Frankie's oldest daughter, Sherry, a college student, called authorities to check on the latter's siblings after observing that their mother often left the children alone at home. In 2023, both the eight passengers and Con Zeon's accounts were terminated, and Ruby was unable to create any new accounts. On August 30th, 2023, Frankie and Hildebrandt were arrested in Ivans, Utah, and two days later both were charged with six counts of aggravated child abuse, a felony. According to the statement from the Santa Clara Ivans Public Safety Department, the arrests were triggered after Frankie's 12-year-old son, who appeared emasitated and had open wounds and duct tape around the extremities. He had escaped through a window of the Hildebrand's house and asked at a neighboring house for food and water. Emergency services found Frankie's 10-year-old daughter in the house also malnourished. Both children were taken to a hospital where the boy was treated for severe malnourishment and deep lacerations from being tied up with rope. A search of the house found evidence consistent with the markings on the 12-year-old and the Utah Division of Child and Family Services took the boy and girl and two more of Frankie's children into care. Police later reported that, according to the boy, Kayan, Pepper, and Honey had been used to dress his wounds. Frankie and Hildebrandt were held without bail. Hildebrandt surrendered her license as a counselor, pending resolution of the court case and disciplinary investigation. After her arrest, YouTube suspended Frankie from the platform, also suspending two channels that were linked to her. On December 18th, 2023, Frankie pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse. She later pleaded not guilty to two other counts. The factual basis mentioned an incident of Frankie forcing her son to work outdoors over several weeks with inadequate protection, resulting in severe sunburns and claims that the children were possessed. Frankie agreed to serve a prison sentence and to serve her respective sentences consecutively rather than concurrently. Frankie was expected to testify against Hildebrandt in Hildebrandt's upcoming trial, but Hildebrandt separately pleaded guilty to four counts of felony aggravated child abuse on December 27th, with two charges dropped as part of the other plea deal. On February 20th, 2024, Frankie received four consecutive sentences of between 1 and 15 years imprisonment, meaning she must serve a minimum term of four years. Anyways, this was just heartbreaking to watch. And it's all based on religion. The Frankes are members of the Church of Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints. Ruby and Jodi Hildebrandt both claimed to believe that the abuse they committed was justified because of their religious beliefs. Both had made claims that the abuse was to teach children the proper way to repent for their sins and to expel evil from their bodies. In a recorded phone call from Jodi Hilderbrandt, she compares herself to a biblical martyr and says that she is going to prison unjustly. Aware of the power of her example. Now, here's the thing like, until I don't really want to get deep, deep into details, but you seriously should watch this. And it is hard to stomach, of course. But her husband, Kevin Frankie, like when they interviewed him, he was like, Oh, I had no idea. We're separated because that's what God wants us to do, and that's what Jody said, and blah blah blah. And I know this woman, Jody Hildebrandt, like I said, the devil, she holds a lot of power over people, but like he so they they basically separated because that's what Jody told them to do, and that was the word of God, right? But like he never checked on his children because he so-called wasn't allowed to be around his kids in this time of you know, um, praise Jesus separation, which I think is really fucked up as a dad. Like he had to have known, kind of like had a clue of what was going on, right? So, um, coming into that, there is another documentary that I just watched, and this was again very hard to stomach. The Turpins, a new house of horror, and it's a Diane Sawyer special, and that is on Hulu too. So this is definitely a good watch, again, if you can stomach it, and you know, viewer discretion advise, right? Because there is a lot of um crazy, cruel, disgusting behavior towards children. So I will say that. Um, and like I said, if you don't take lightly to that, maybe it's not something that you can stomach. So the Turpin case involved the abuse of children and dependent adults by their biological parents, David and Louise Turpin of Paris, California, U.S., the ages of the 13 victims ranged from 2 to 29 years old. On January 14th, 2018, one of the daughters, then 17-year-old Jordan Turpin, escaped and called local police, who then raided the residence and discovered disturbing evidence. Given the number of dependents involved, the degree of the abuse and its protracted nature occurring over decades, the story got significant national and international attention. Experts in family abuse considered the case to be extraordinary for many reasons. In February of 2019, both Turpin parents pleaded guilty on 14 felony counts, including abuse of dependent adult, child abuse, torture, and false imprisonment. In April, they were sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Um yeah, this is just so so disgusting, and they are so goofy and dirty, and hills have eyes looking. The parents, the children are beautiful. Them, I don't know. Like I but the Turpin's originally identified as Pentecostal Christians, and as part of their beliefs, the couple had numerous children because quote unquote God called on them to do so. They had 10 daughters and three sons between 1988 and 2015. The couple later left the church, and it is claimed by a relative, Teresa Robinet, that the couple experimented with other lifestyles, including witchcraft and swinging, of course. So the abuse is very complex and very gruesome, but definitely check out um, you know, that documentary if you're into crime. Totally like both of those I just talked about, I would give them a five on documentary style, like a five-star, because they were executed very well. Um now there's some UK shows and movies that I want to talk about on Netflix. Um, I really love my UK stuff. Uh, I think Netflix does a really good job with this. So the first show that I want to talk about is Beef. So I was like really hesitant for a while and watching this, and I had finally like did it probably about I don't know, a few months after it came out. Um, but I thought it was phenomenal. I it was so quirky and like crazy and weird and um I don't even know, like it made you want to keep watching it, right? So this is a comedy drama um series created by Lee Sung Jin and it's in or I'm sorry, it's on Netflix, and it's basically about two strangers whose involvement in a road rage incident escalates into a prolonged feud. It kind of like reminded me of the modern day um War of the Roses. I absolutely fucking loved this. It I thought it was like so much better than I could have thought it was gonna be. Um, the 10-episode series was released on Netflix on April 6th, 2023. And I think, like I said, I definitely would give this like probably 4.7. So definitely check that out. Okay, now I want to talk about Beh Behind Her Eyes. I haven't completely finished this, but this was very compelling, very creative, um, and freaky, mind-bending, psychological, I guess, but it's you know, exactly. So it's a British psychological thriller. It was created by Steve Lightfoot based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Sarah Pinborough. Um, and it's premiered on Netflix, February 17th, 2021. So Louise is a single mother who begins an affair with her new boss, David. Matters take a strange turn when she is drawn into an unlikely friendship with his wife, Adele. What starts as an unconventional love triangle soon becomes a dark psychological tale of suspense and twisted revelations. As Louise finds herself caught in a dangerous web of secrets where nothing and no one are what they seem. Very good. Um, very original. I I definitely would give this at least I'd give it a good 4.3. Okay, now we have to talk about Baby Reindeer, and this is a true story, and oh my god, was it so good and so raunchy and so raw and fucked up. So Baby Reindeer is a British black comedy, drama, and thriller television miniseries created by and starring Richard Gadd. So the plot is about an aspiring comedian named Donnie Dunn, works as a bartender at a pub in London. He offers a free cup of tea to a weeping customer, Martha, to cheer her up. Martha develops an attachment to Donnie and begins to stalk him both in person and online. As Donnie attempts to further his career in comedy, the stalking begins to affect every aspect of his life, forcing him to understand his own behavior, confront his sexuality, and come to terms with the trauma of a past sexual assault. As he attempts to escape Martha's stalking, the mix of fear and sympathy and realizes he feels for his stalker threatens to ruin his life because he ha ends up having feelings for her. Um but it is like. It is such a fucked up story, but it is so good. I definitely give that one a five because it it got real twisted there too. So I I really respect it. And of course, I'm gonna go there. Um, I did watch Jeffrey Epstein The Filthy Rich um TV series on Netflix, and you know it was really hard. It's hard for me to follow this shit because there's like so much, there's so many layers to this Jeffrey Epstein bullshit. And I am gonna get on here and do many, many parts of episodes. Um I think there's a lot of misleading information, and there's this and that. And to me, Jeffrey Epstein was a disgusting predator of a man, but he also was a middleman, right? A messenger. So this is an American web documentary television miniseries about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The miniseries is based on the 2016 book of the same name by James Patterson and co-written by John Connolly and Tim Malley. Filthy Rich was released on May 27th, 2020, on Netflix. The four-part documentary features interviews with several survivors, including Virginia Gurfee and Maria Farmer, along with former staff members and former police chief Michael Reeder, a key individual from the first criminal case against Epstein. Um, Filthy Rich tells stories of the survivors and how he used his wealth and power to commit these crimes. Very um, you know, fucked up. And it kind of makes everybody angry because everything's coming to light now, and like so many more people were involved. Like I said, there's so many layers to this, and I know if you guys have followed any of this, you guys know what I mean. Um, I'd give it like a 3.7. So the movie Tarot, um, it was made in 2024, and I remember going to the drive-in to see this, and I actually was surprisingly um very satisfied with how great it was because normally like corny horror movies, um, you know, they're they're shitty nowadays, right? But I think the idea was very original. I love that it's based on tarot cards. So tarot is a 2024 supernatural horror film um written and directed by Spencer Cohen and Anna Hallberg. In this feature film, um, it's based on the 1992 novel Horoscope by Nicholas Adams. So it's about a group of college friends, Haley, Grant, Paxton, Paige, Madeline Lucas, and Elise. They rent a mansion in the Cat Skills for Elise's birthday. As the atmosphere turns awkward following Haley and Grant's recent breakup, the group attempt to lighten the mood by having Haley read their fortunes with a box of strange old tarot cards discovered in the basement. Elise gets a high priestess, Lucas gets a hermit, Madeline gets the hanged man, Paige gets the magician, and Paxton gets the fool. Grant receives the devil, and Haley herself gets the death card. The next day, the group returns to campus. That night, Elise is lured to the attic, then attacked by a monstrous version of the high priestess, who proceeds to bludgeon her to death on the attic ladder. The group meets again after finding out about Elise's death that night. While returning home, Lucas is terrorized by the hermit and chased into the restricted area of a train station, being killed by a speeding train. Each death corresponds to the tarot readings that the friends had received. So there was like a really corny, stupid ass part in the movie, which shouldn't even have been there because it's like, well, why did that one survive and the other one's in it? You know how it goes. Um, but I overall thought it was pretty good for being, you know, I wouldn't say like an indie horror movie, but it's kind of, right? Because it wasn't huge in the box office, but I'd give it a solid four for sure. So another um British movie that I really enjoyed, um, it's called Stay Close, and it was on Netflix. So this is a British mystery drama television series based on the 2012 Harlan Coben novel of the same title produced by Red Production Company for Netflix. I really like, I'm a huge fan of Harlan Coben. So the plot is Megan Pierce is a suburban suburban mom living in the fictional suburb of Blackpool, hiding a murky pass. She has found her soulmate and Dave, and they have three great children. Ray Levine was once a talented documentary photographer. Losing the woman he loved changed him. Now he is in a dead-end job playing a paparazu for hire, pandering to rich kid celebrities. Michael Broom is a detective still haunted by a cold case from years ago. When local husband and father Stuart Green disappeared without any trace, Green's wife still waits for Seward to return. When another man goes missing on the anniversary of Stewart's disappearance, Broom takes a case in the hope of exercising his demons. Lives are in danger of being ruined and relationships splintered. As Broom's investigations open up old wounds, stir up memories, and threaten to expose the truth. Weaving their way through the spaces of what binds these three lives together are a couple of colorful psychopaths intent on completing their own agenda. Thought it was very, very good. Um, like I said, anything that I've watched on Netflix that's you know, UK, or um, there's been some Sweden drama series that I've watched. I'm sorry, Swedish ones, and I thought those were very good too. Um also Harlan Coben's Safe was very good. So Safe is titled on screen as Harlan Coben's Safe, is a British drama thriller, you know, television minus mini series, again by author Harlan Coben. Um, and the plot is Safe focuses on Britton Tom Delaney Hall, a pediatric surgeon and widowed father of two teen daughters. He is struggling to connect with his daughters as they still grieve the loss of his wife from cancer one year prior. After his 16-year-old daughter Jenny goes missing, Tom uncovers a web of secrets as he searches for her. Um, really good. I mean, both of those I'd give like a 4.2. I thought they were very interesting. And like I said, I'm I'm a huge fan of Harlan Coben. I I think I think he pumps out some really interesting stuff. Okay, so one that I'm actually still trying to play catch up is Yellow Jackets, which I again I was one of these things where I was like, eh, no. And then I finally went back and started watching it, and I was very pleasantly surprised. So Yellow Jackets is an American thriller drama TV series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson for Showtime. So the series follows two primary storylines. The first involves a group of teenagers as they strive to survive in the wilderness after their plane crashes in 1996, while the second takes place 25 years later and focuses on the survivors' attempts to piece their lives back together. So there's a lot of good people in here. Um, Christina Ricci, Juliet Lewis, which is like one of my favorite actresses, Tawny Cypress, um Sophie Thatcher is in it, Melanie Um Linsky is in it. So it is there's so many layers to this drama, but it's it's really good. Um it's really gruesome and raunchy and raw. Of course, I love those. Um, I think if you haven't checked it out yet, I think you totally should. I think you would be pleasantly surprised like I was. Um, like I said, I'm still playing catch up and it's still, I think it's still going, right? Uh let's see. How many more? Yep, it's still present. So from 2021 until now, and I don't even know. Number of seasons is three. I know I'm still on the second season, but it's really, really good. So definitely check it out. Okay, so this was a hardwatch, and I watched this when I was still pregnant with Jack. In fact, I think I was about six and a half months pregnant, and I was attempting to make cake pops. Um, again, very hard watch, but very interesting. So this is a 2011 documentary directed by Liz Garbus about the 2009 State Parkway crash, and it premiered on HBO on July 25th of 2011. So the film profiles Diane Shuler, who caused the fatal car accident, through interviews with her family members and friends, and attempts to piece together Shuler's actions on the day of the accident in order to determine why the accident took place. The primary interview interviewers are Shuler's husband, Daniel, and sister-in-law Jay, who were convinced that the toxicology report showing Shuler's high level of alcohol and THC intoxication were inaccurate, or that Shuler did not knowingly consume the intoxicants. Um there's a lot more that goes into this than that. Um it's you know, there's even like parts where they like pulled up her dental records, and I guess she had like an outstanding horrible toothache. Uh, she had like a lot of dental work done and had all this shit wrong with her teeth, so I think she was like drinking and using THC for that, but it's it sounds like it's like it sounds like it's just that, but it's it's so much more. It's such a good documentary. I would definitely give that like a 4.8. Okay, so now the Murder Murders, which that I just started watching, like randomly was watching this um series, this documentary series on Netflix one night, and I didn't even realize it was like based on a true story, and then I like got so deep into this story, right? So the one on Netflix, um, A Southern Scandal is a true crime documentary, and it's a series detailing the downfall of the prominent South Carolina legal family led by Alex Murda. The show covers the 2021 murders of Maggie and Paul Murda, a fatal boat crash, and investigations, and the two seasons were released in 2023. Very, very compelling and interesting. I would give that a five because I'm so interested in it and I'm invested in it, and I'm hoping that there's like more that comes with this, right? Through the trials. Then I also watched the Murda Death in the Family um actual, you know, TV show series on Hulu, and that was amazing. I thought, I thought it was done perfectly. So this one is a scripted Hulu true crime miniseries that premiered on October 15th of 2025. So this dramatizes the downfall of again, Alex Murda, who was convicted of murdering his wife Maggie, who actually it's Patricia Arquette plays Maggie, which she did a great job. And son Paul, and the guy that played it was Johnny Birchtold. By the way, they make the kids look way better looking on this series than they are in real life, no offense, but great, great, great show. And there's also an official podcast too that you can watch you can watch on Hulu. So I want to talk about some movies that are coming out that I want to see. Actually, well, now it's you know past 1 a.m. So today is March 6th, so it is out today. The bride, um, definitely want to see that. That looks so good. Um, undertone is a sci-fi horror thriller that's March 13th, of course, 13, my lucky number. I'm super, super stoked. Um, this movie comes out April 17th, and this is Lee Cronin's The Mummy. Looks super fucking creepy. I have to see that. Um, I hope it's as good as it looks. I'm pretty interested in the movie Obsession that's coming out May 15th. That looks pretty good, of course. It's horror. So the movie drum roll, please, that I have been waiting for since I have seen anything, even little tiny advertisements of it, is disclosure day, and that is June 12th, and my husband actually wants to see that too, and he's excited to take me, which you know, I love the horror movies, Paul doesn't. I like sci-fi movies and action movies, and Paul is on board with that. So I'm actually like that. And again, from the previews, I hope it is as good as it seems. If it's not, I'm gonna be super pissed because I'm very excited. Again, that one is called Disclosure Day. So another movie that um actually my husband brought to my attention, and I looked into it. I definitely want to see it too. So this is again in June. Um, The Death of Robin Hood. So we both want to see that. Um, a new moana is coming out. I want to see that, of course. Oh yeah, and then the Odyssey is in July. I am so stoked for the Odyssey. I definitely want to see that. Thank God there's finally some new good shit. Well, it appears to be good, hopefully. Um, is finally coming out because we have not really had a whole lot of good movies. Um, I hear the scream, the new scream movie did not do good in the box office, and I could have told you why, and that that obviously was gonna be the case because it's been done too many times, right? Um, I think they really need to up their game and stop remaking over and over and over and over, and these, you know, part one, part two, part three, part four, blah blah blah blah, and goes on and on. And on because it gets old and just like a run-on sentence, nobody wants to keep listening or watching the same listening to or watching the same thing, I should say. But, anyways, that's about it for now. That's what I have. Um, I will be back on soon to revisit this and talk about some more shows and documentaries or docusaries that I have watched. Thank you guys for listening. Again, you can listen to this podcast on any platform that you listen to podcasts on.
